The Company is in the vanguard of new clean energy technology

Through its Renewable Energy Business of the Group and its United Kingdom subsidiary ScottishPower, the Group is working on a number of major projects:

  • Carbon capture and storage (CCS): The first pilot plant in the UK is in operation at ScottishPower’s Longannet coal-fired plant in Scotland, with the aim of launching CCS capacity there of 300 MW in 2014. The project is backed by the World Wildlife Fund and other ecology groups.
  • The PERSEO project: IBERDROLA has allocated €6 million to innovative generation technologies and systems aimed at minimizing environmental impact.
  • Onshore wind power: The IBERDROLA’s Renewable Energy Business consolidates its global leadership in the wind energy business with a total capacity of 12.438 MW.
  • Offshore wind power: The IBERDROLA’s Renewable Energy Business is well-placed to lead the future development of marine energy technologies in Europe. The company ought to develop the large volume of marine wind power projects awarded to the company. These amount to around 10,000 MW worldwide and will be added gradually to its project pipeline. Specifically, its ScottishPower Renewables subsidiary in the UK, and Vattenfall have obtained the rights to build the world’s leading developer of offshore wind farms, -7,200 MW-, supplying power to up to five million households.
  • Mini-hydro energy: the mini-hydro facilities installed in Spain adding up 342 MW.
  • Solar energy: The IBERDROLA’s Renewable Energy Business has opened its first solar plant in Puertollano (Ciudad Real).
  • Biomass energy: IBERDROLA in 2009 started up operations at Spain’s first wooden biomass plant at Corduente, Guadalajara province.
  • Photovoltaic Power: The subsidiary of the Group in the US, IBERDROLA RENEWABLES, is to build two major photovoltaic (PV) solar power plants with aggregate capacity of 50 megawatts (MW) in Alamosa (Colorado) and Cooper Crossing (Arizona). These two facilities will give the Company a foothold in the PV segment in the US.
  • Marine energy: The subsidiary of the Group, ScottishPower Renewables is developing, in Orkney Islands (Scotland), what will be the world’s largest wave energy site in terms of installed capacity (3 MW).
